Artist Thure Thulstrup, a popular magazine artist at the turn of the 20th century, depicts a breezy autumnal scene at the Capitol in this 1901 illustration for Collier’s Weekly. Thulstrup excelled at giving readers an at-the-scene account of current events. In this case, one sees Washington society promenading on the Capitol’s West Front stairs. In the foreground prominent Members of Congress take their ease along with the white-bearded Senate (and former House) Chaplain William Milburn.
