As Chairman of the Committee on Coinage, Weights, and Measures, John A. Kasson embarked on an idealistic quest to convert the nation to the metric system in the 1860s. The Kasson Act, passed in 1866, legally recognized the metric system of measurement. Kasson left the House in the 1880s to become Ambassador to Germany.
