1
00:00:00.200 --> 00:00:18.500
I remember the last day that I was a Page, just as I remember the first day I was a Page. But I remember being out on the floor looking for a Member.

2
00:00:20.800 --> 00:00:25.800
You know, back in those days, communications on the Hill was by the bell system.

3
00:00:26.400 --> 00:00:37.000
If you had to show up for a roll call vote or a quorum call, you'd hear two or three bells ring all through the Capitol and the House Office Buildings, and you knew to go to the floor.

4
00:00:39.000 --> 00:00:58.200
The signal for adjournment was four bells. On my last day as a Page, as adjournment approached, I was out on the floor looking for a Member when we adjourned.

5
00:01:01.400 --> 00:01:19.000
And the documentarian Pages were responsible for ringing the bells. And I'll never forget—I was on the aisle. I'll never forget those four bells ringing that day.

6
00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:42.000
And it passed through my mind, "This is probably the last moment that you will ever be on the House Floor when it's in session." And I can still hear those four bells, loudly and clearly.

7
00:01:44.000 --> 00:02:05.800
And I'm glad that I had the sense to appreciate that moment, and I'll always be thankful that I had the opportunity to serve in the United States Congress. It was a magnificent experience.
