LAURIE, James; a House Chaplain; born in Edinburgh, Scotland, February 11, 1778; graduated from the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Scotland; D.D., Williams College, Williamstown, Mass., 1815; ordained in the Presbyterian Church in 1800; clerk, Register’s Office of the Treasury Department of the United States, 1803–1853; pastor, F Street Presbyterian Church, Washington, D.C., 1803–1853; elected Chaplain of the United States House of Representatives for the Eighth and for the succeeding Congress (November 30, 1804–April 21, 1806); died on April 18, 1853, in Washington, D.C.
