GALLAGHER, James; a House Chaplain; born in Washington County, Tenn., October 8, 1792; attended Washington College, Limestone, Tennessee, 1811–1813; licensed to preach by the Presbytery of Abingdon, Va., 1815; ordained in the Presbyterian Church in 1816; school founder; teacher; pastor, Church of New Providence, Hawkins County, Tenn., 1816–1830; pastor, church in Rogersville, Tenn., 1816–1830; pastor, Third Presbyterian Church, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1830–1835; professor, Marion College, Marion County, Mo., 1835–1839; preacher, presbytery of St. Louis, Mo., 1839–1853; elected Chaplain of the United States House of Representatives for the Thirty-second Congress (December 7, 1852–March 3, 1853); died on October 19, 1853, in Brunswick, Mo.
