FRENCH, John W.; a House Chaplain; born in Connecticut, November 9, 1809; attended Washington College, Hartford, Conn.; attended General Protestant Episcopal Seminary, New York, N.Y.; admitted to Holy Orders (Episcopal) in 1835; professor, Bristol College, Bucks County, Pa., 1836; rector, church in Portland, Maine; rector, Church of the Epiphany, Washington, D.C.; elected Chaplain of the United States House of Representatives for the Twenty-seventh Congress (June 9, 1841–September 13, 1841); chaplain and professor, United States Military Academy, West Point, N.Y., 1856–1871; died on July 8, 1871, in West Point, N.Y.; interment at U.S. Military Academy Cemetery, West Point, N.Y.
