Biography

FORNEY, John W., a Clerk from Pennsylvania; born in Lancaster, Pa., September 30, 1817; attended local schools; printer’s apprentice; editor; deputy surveyor, Philadelphia, Pa., 1845; elected Clerk of the United States House of Representatives for the Thirty-second and for the succeeding Congress (December 1, 1851–February 4, 1856); chairman, Pennsylvania Democratic party, 1856; unsuccessful candidate for election to the United States Senate in 1857; elected Clerk of the United States House of Representatives for the Thirty-sixth Congress (February 3, 1860–July 4, 1861); Secretary of the United States Senate, 1861–1868; author; died on December 9, 1881, in Philadelphia, Pa.; interment in West Lauren Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania.
