Biography

a Postmaster from Indiana; born in Owen County, Ky., circa 1844; United States Army, 1863; merchant; Indiana state librarian, 1875–1877; member of the Indiana state legislature 1877–1878; clerk, Office of the Governor, state of Indiana, circa 1880; folding room superintendent, Office of the Sergeant-at-Arms, United States Senate, circa 1879–1883; elected Postmaster of the United States House of Representatives for the Forty-eighth Congress and for the two succeeding Congresses (December 4, 1883–December 1, 1889); business owner; elected Postmaster of the United States House of Representatives for the Fifty-second and for the succeeding Congress, and served until his death on March 24, 1895 (December 9, 1891–March 24, 1895); died in Washington, D.C., on March 24, 1895; interment at Glenwood Cemetery, Washington, D.C.
