CONE, Spencer Houghton; a House Chaplain; born in Princeton, Mercer County, N.J., April 30, 1785; attended College of New Jersey (now Princeton University), Princeton, N.J., 1797–1799; D.D., College of New Jersey (now Princeton University), Princeton, N.J., 1832; ordained as a Baptist minister in 1815 in Washington, D.C.; United States Army, 1812–1814; teacher; actor; newspaper publisher; elected Chaplain of the United States House of Representatives for the Fourteenth Congress (December 7, 1815–April 30, 1816); pastor, Baptist Church, Alexandria, D.C., 1816; pastor, Oliver-Street Baptist Church, New York, N.Y., 1823–1841; director, American Baptist Home Mission Society, 1832–1839; president, Baptist triennial convention, 1832–1841; pastor, First Baptist Church, New York, N.Y., 1841–1855; president, American and Foreign Bible Society, 1836–1849; died on August 28, 1855, in New York, N.Y.; interment at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Schooley’s Mountain, N.J.
