CLARKE, Matthew St. Clair, a Clerk from Pennsylvania; born in Greencastle, Franklin County, Pa., December 31, 1791; elected Clerk of the United States House of Representatives for the Seventeenth Congress and for the five succeeding Congresses (December 3, 1822–December 2, 1833); elected Clerk of the United States House of Representatives for the Twenty-seventh Congress (May 31, 1841–December 6, 1843); Sixth Auditor of the United States Treasury, 1843–1845; publisher; died on May 6, 1852, in Washington, D.C.; interment in Congressional Cemetery, Washington, D.C.
