BASCOM, Henry Bidleman; a House Chaplain; born in Hancock, Delaware County, N.Y., May 27, 1796; licensed to preach in the Methodist Church, Highland County, Ohio, 1813; circuit preacher; editor; elected Chaplain of the United States House of Representatives for the Eighteenth Congress (December 8, 1823–May 27, 1824); president, Madison College, Uniontown, Pa., 1827–1829; professor, Augusta College, Augusta, Ky., 1832–1842; agent, American Colonization Society, 1829–1832; president, Transylvania University, Lexington, Ky., 1842–1850; member, Louisville Methodist convention, Louisville, Ky., 1845; ordained in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, St. Louis, Mo., 1850; bishop, Methodist Episcopal Church South, 1850; died on September 8, 1850, in Louisville, Ky.; interment Eastern Cemetery, Lexington, Ky.
