Collection of the U.S. House of Representatives, Gift of Mrs. Kathleen Rutledge
This carte-de-visite shows Albert S. Pillsbury and his mother, Elizabeth Pillsbury, not long before Albert moved from Massachusetts to Washington, DC, to serve as a Page in the House of Representatives. Albert’s older brother Elliott had been a Page for several years before Albert’s arrival in 1862. Many Pages were, like Albert, around 11 years old when they began their House careers. Albert remained in service until 1867, acquiring a ring-side experience of the Civil War and President Lincoln’s assassination.
